Q: What should I know about my political future?

-- Hillary C.

A: I pulled three cards for you from the Ma'at Tarot by Julie Cuccia-Watts -- one for the past, one for the present, and one for the future.

Because the Ma'at deck is oversized, I’m don’t shuffle the cards like a standard poker deck. Instead, I mix the cards hand over hand.

As I was getting ready to do your reading, one card literally popped out of the deck and fell on the table. It was the World card -- which in this case represents the literal scope of your question. You are involved in politics on a world scale. I think the World card also has a symbolic significance for you: politics must mean the world to you.

As I was focusing on your question itself, three very powerful cards also seemed to make themselves stand out from the rest of the deck. I'll read them in the order they fell, as the past, present, and future of the question at hand.

First, the Star card came up. The Star is traditionally the card of hope and inspiration, and in this case I think it reflects your past as a hopeful young woman and an idealist.

This particular Star card happens to be exceptionally watery. In tarot, water symbolizes emotions, and at some point in your past you were literally wallowing in emotions. At the same time, however, you were always adept at mixing and balancing the elements of your political and personal life, which are symbolized by the two pitchers of water in the image.

Next, you received the Death card. That might seem like an ominous card to get in response to a question about the future, but don't worry: in tarot, the card is rarely literal.

Your career isn't about to end, either. Instead, the Death card suggests that something in your life is in the process of concluding, or that it has already died and you simply need to acknowledge its passing. The Death card could represent the death of your early hopes and ideals (like those we saw in the Star card), or it could represent the death of some phase of your political career -- along with an implied rebirth, or the beginning of its next phase.

The deck's creator, Julie Cuccia-Watts, says her Death card "represents the promise of renewal. It is complete and total change, transformation, and transmutation." The Death card here could represent a dramatic shift in your public image, or a political makeover of sorts.

Finally, you received the King of Swords. Traditionally, the King of Swords often symbolizes a lawyer, a politician, or a skilled wordsmith. It's your husband! In this case, I think it's kind of interesting to note how much this particular King of Swords resembles his real-life counterpart.

Clearly, your political future is intrinsically bound up with your husband. You might find yourself turning to him as a confidant, an advisor, a political ally, or a role model. However you choose to parlay your partnership with him into future political success will be completely up to you.
